Following the alcohol-related death of an 18-year-old Penn State student, school officials are renewing their efforts to curb excessive drinking at a school known for its party scene.
Joseph Dado’s body was found in a campus stairwell on September 21. He had been drinking all night at a party at the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity, which has since been suspended by the university’s student-run Interfraternity Council.
The coroner said Dado’s blood-alcohol level was 0.169, more than twice the legal limit. The death has been ruled an accident, although authorities are looking into whether anyone furnished him with alcohol.
School administrators who feel their repeated calls for responsible drinking go unheeded see the tragedy as the starting point for renewed efforts to promote their message. But they realize it won’t be easy at a school where alcohol abuse, an issue face by many other schools, has been a problem for years.
Penn State was named the nation’s number-one party school this year by a Princeton Review survey.
