College Binge Drinking is an educational site developed to build awareness among college students, educators, and parents about the dangers of binge drinking. Produced by Elements Behavioral Health, we review news, research, and related literature to bring you the latest information on this issue.
Binge drinking has been rising as an issue for decades, but more recently some extreme cases have brought the media’s attention to this dangerous behavior. Tragic stories of college students falling off balconies or dying in drunk driving incidents remind us that you don’t have to drink every day to have a problem with alcohol. The important thing that colleges, educators, students, and parents should know is that studies have shown that education and prevention efforts can and do work. In fact, a study published in 2009 showed that when a student shows a risky pattern, a single intervention session can impact their behavior. Studies have shown that college students often overestimate how much their peers drink, and when they are made aware of that fact, they will reduce their own drinking levels.
We hope that College Binge Drinking brings more awareness to a serious health issue facing young adults.
