Marijuana Use Increases Sexual Risk Taking in Young Adults
New reports from our nation’s Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration show that while use of many kinds of illicit drugs has declined, marijuana use continues to climb. The abuse of marijuana is particularly entrenched among young adults in this country. Two studies, one twenty plus years old and another conducted within the past year, demonstrate how using substances like alcohol and marijuana places young adults at an increased risk for unwise sexual behavior and the negative consequences attached.

Binge Drinking and Dieting Linked
Binge drinking is excessive drinking during a single occasion. Binging is known as having five, or even more drinks for a man and four or more drinks at once for a woman. Women and men metabolize alcohol at different rates and that is why drink ratios for them differ. The U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that roughly 16 percent of American adults engage in binge drinking on an almost weekly basis. The problem is becoming more complicated as young people, determined not to gain weight, fast from eating before a night of heavy drinking. The phenomenon has been dubbed drunkorexia by academics studying the habit.

Binge Drinking Can Be Deadly
According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), eight percent of younger teens and 30 percent of older teens engage in binge drinking in the course of one month’s time. In fact, nearly 15 percent of teens who participate in underage drinking, drink excessively enough to qualify as binge drinkers. Government statistics tell us that 33 percent of 12th graders and over 40 percent of university students report binge drinking in the last 14 days.
