Substance abuse information for parents and teens
European females appear to love their drink. In fact, according to the latest figures from the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction, there is an increase in binge drinking among girls. This increase is creating concern among policy makers.
A recent news report noted that of the 100,000 15- to 16-year olds surveyed, six out of 10 had consumed alcohol in the previous month. Another four out of 10 reported heavy episodic drinking of five drinks or more during the same time period.
Within the female sect, reports of binge drinking during the previous month showed a stiff rise from 35 percent to 42 percent between the last survey in 2003 and the most recent in 2007.
According to the centre, "while in the 1995 survey this drinking pattern was on average more common among boys than girls, the gap had diminished substantially by 2007".
In addition to the growing problem among females, the survey also revealed that cannabis, other illicit drug use and cigarette smoking among teenagers fell between 2003 and 2007.
EMCDDA director Wolfgang Götz said in the news report: "The long-term picture we are now able to draw from these repeated surveys supports other indicators, which point to stabilizing or even falling adolescent cannabis use.
"Less positively, the report highlights harmful patterns of alcohol use, which call for broad-based health education approaches when addressing the prevention of substance use among young people."
This may be a case of teens seeking some sort of vice and that vice for now is binge drinking. The rising number of female binge drinkers is a new trend, but not one that should be that surprising, given the rising number of female drinkers among all ages and in other countries. Perhaps it is best to look at the causes to determine the start of this trend.
