Binge drinking appears to be a favorite pastime among too many individuals. Whether it is a professional sporting event, a college party or simply time out with friends, individuals are pushing themselves to the limit to see how much alcohol they can consume in a short amount of time.
A recent Private Health report shows that while this activity may seem like something fun to do with friends, the negative consequences can show up at the time of the activity, as well as much later in life. This is especially true among Britons who have favored this drinking activity.
Dr. Evelyn Gillan, chief executive of Alcohol Scotland, believes that those Britons who have indulged in binge drinking activities are storing up problems for later on. She suggests that Britons should address the idea that binge drinking is an acceptable practice and reverse this concept.
The doctor highlights that binge drinking has been linked to 60 diseases, suggesting that those who engage in binge drinking activities are only asking for problems down the road. The link between binge drinking and heart disease alone should provide a significant wake-up call for those who engage.
A study featured in the British Medical Journal suggests that drinking the same amount of alcohol over several days instead of during one binge can reduce the risk of heart disease. Dr. Gillan also suggests that irresponsible pricing practices are fueling excessive consumption in the UK and should be stopped.
She stresses that while it may seem like a bargain drink price at the register, the higher price may be paid later on in life.
