If you went to college, you most likely remember the parties. Young adults free of the restrictions of home and parents often cut loose and overdo it. College is a time when young people experiment with their independence, and not always in positive ways.
According to the most recent College Health Assessment, college women are drinking more often than men. In fact, 59.8 percent of women (vs. 58.6 percent of men) reported that they had used alcohol within the last 30 days. Women were also more likely to have used alcohol than were men. Although the difference was small, it does fly in the face of our expectations: men are not necessarily the biggest partiers.
A striking 10 percent of women reported having drunk seven plus drinks during their last drinking bout, by definition a bout of binge drinking. Binge drinking can be more dangerous than drinking a few drinks over a longer period of time – people who binge drink tend to take more risks. Women who become so intoxicated are at increased risk of becoming a victim of sexual assault.
Some colleges are responding by requiring students to take alcohol education classes. It is thought that if they are aware of the inherent risks of binge drinking, they will be less likely to partake in the practice. The intention is to educate, not castigate, so that students, particularly young women, are aware of the inherent risks associated with binge drinking.
One common misperception is that “everyone is doing it.” In truth, if you look at the earlier statistics, almost half are NOT doing it. For some, the knowledge that it isn’t the norm to become extremely intoxicated, is enough to influence them to modify their behavior.
