There are some who would assume alcohol and college campuses are synonymous, but if a student is drinking under the legal age of consumption, he or she is putting themselves at risk of a problem with the law.
According to a recent Keloland report, college students in the state of Iowa are keeping police busy. Iowa public universities are experiencing a rise in the number of alcohol-related arrests and this rise is considered by many to be significant.
The Iowa Board of Regents conducted a study on the behavior of college students and in the process found that alcohol use and arrests as a result of that use rose 42 percent across campuses in the United States. Within the state of Iowa, however, arrests were up 53 percent. An even more troubling finding was the state had a 97 percent increase in drunken driving.
With such high numbers, it isn’t any wonder that officials are troubled. When examining the results, one alcohol counselor noted the problem isn’t unique to Iowa and often the problem starts before the student leaves home to go to school. Some officials are scrambling to understand this rise, worrying it could turn into a lifelong problem for some.
Ben Granville of Keystone Treatment Centers was interviewed for this piece and he noted that the trend is troubling as the main goal is to ensure these students get a good education; that they are doing the right thing; and they are learning.
Granville noted that the earlier an individual starts to drink, the more likely they are to develop a problem with alcohol. In his field, counselors are treating more and more patients who are not yet old enough for college, indicating the problem is starting earlier for many individuals.
