A recent story on Iowa’s KCRG Channel 9 focuses on the seemingly intractable problem of college binge drinking among students at the University of Iowa. Reports show that students at UI drink much more than their peers nationally.
Iowa City officials have tried all sorts of tactics to decrease the dangerous practice of binge drinking, from increasing penalties to manufacturing special activities for youth that are alcohol-free.
The Vice President of Student Services, Tom Rocklin, believes that the behavior is simply not normal college antics. It is for that reason that he became involved in a the campaign, “21 Makes Sense.” Their goal is to support a measure that the City Council passed this Spring that requires anyone under 21 to be out of the bars by 10 pm. The current laws allow anyone 19 and older to stay in the bars at night.
The council will have to put the law to a public vote or repeal it. The problem was that students showed up in droves to stop the attempt to increase the age at which they could enter bars to 21.
The problem begs the question: why is anyone under 21 in a bar at all?
The pressure against the bill comes from students who believe that this will just push students to drink at house parties and from businesses who want the revenue from students, even if they aren’t drinking alcohol.
The city has become embarrassed by their reputation for being a party town where college students drink abusively. Some might question the need for a law that would not be needed if current laws were enforced. If there was stepped up enforcement of underage drinking, and bars knew they were being watched closely, the problem may decline without further legislation.
Even the football coach at UI wants the bill to pass. He prefers the university be known for its academics and athletics, not binge drinking by minors.
UI continues to try to find ways to discourage binge drinking. Many students binge drink right in university parking lots during tail-gating parties before football games.
