Is it true that happiness declines with age? For those young men who believe so, they are more likely to engage in risky behaviors such as binge drinking. This misguided negative view is examined in a recent Science Daily post.
This phenomenon was examined by Dr. John Garry and Dr. Maria Lohan from Queen’s University Belfast, Northern Ireland in face-to-face interviews of more than 1,000 citizens of Northern Ireland over the age of 15.
Those individuals in the younger age group believed that aging was associated with a decline in happiness. In the study and data analysis, however, there was no difference between the self-reported happiness levels of young people and old people.
A little more than half of the study respondents were classified as binge drinkers, with 59 percent of them male and 45 percent female. Overall, those young men who were pessimistic about future happiness were more likely to binge-drink.
According to the authors: "Our findings confirm, in the case of binge drinking by men, that risky health behavior in youth is associated with an underestimation of happiness in old age. It may be worthwhile to emphasize, to young men in particular, the positive impact on their lives of reducing alcohol and inform them about happiness in old age."
This area of study is one that is easy to measure, but hard to change. Individuals develop their own perceptions based on what they believe defines happiness at a particular time in their lives. What makes an individual happy at 25 may be completely different than what makes him happy at 65. Unfortunately, continued binge drinking and other risky behaviors may prevent him from ever reaching that age.
