Teen Drug Abuse
Substance abuse information for parents and teens
Summertime is a time for rest and relaxation. For those teens who are getting ready to head to college in the fall, it appears it is also a time for heavy drinking. A recent Science Daily release focused on warnings from a University of Rhode Island researcher who suggests this is the time when teens are known to increase alcohol intake.
Psychology Professor Mark Wood, who is nationally recognized for his research on alcohol, advised parents be prepared for this time in their children’s lives. He suggests parents should closely monitor their children during this time, while also lending emotional support. In a range of studies, a combination of the two has proven to reduce drinking and alcohol-related problems.
Wood also recommends that parents show a clear disapproval of alcohol use, providing clear and fair consequences if their son or daughter should happen to break the rules. He isn’t suggesting the helicopter approach to parenting, necessarily, but instead an open dialogue where lines are clearly drawn.
Some may be concerned that heightened monitoring at this stage of the game may be too late. Wood suggests, however, that the monitoring doesn’t start at this age. Most teenagers in America tend to have considerable drinking experience by the time they are 18 as they generally start drinking by 15. Conversations and monitoring should begin before the teen even enters high school.
Research data on teen drinking shows that more than 1,800 college students lose their lives in alcohol-related car accidents each year. It is also estimated that more than 750,000 college students are involved in physical or sexual assaults involving alcohol.
